Soothing Steps to Follow for Toothache Relief

You don’t need to worry about having a tooth extraction, as long as you have and follow these helpful hints for healing.

A Complete Medical History is an Important Pre-Procedure Step

For most people, a tooth extraction is a routine procedure that is extremely safe. But due to certain medical circumstances, some people are at higher risk for complications. So, before your dentist begins pulling teeth, he must be aware of your complete medical history, any pre-existing conditions, and all of the medications and supplements you are currently taking. That way the dentist has all the information needed to take the right precautions and prescribe the most appropriate aftercare.

When the Procedure is Over

After the dentist has finished pulling teeth, he will pack a gauze pad into the tooth socket and ask you to bite down on it. This helps to stop the bleeding and helps a protective blood clot form, allowing the wound to heal. Be very cautious about protecting the blood clot because if it loosens, you will experience severe pain that requires immediate toothache relief. Call your dentist right away if this occurs to take care of the problem promptly.

Rules for a Quick Recovery

You should plan to recover at home for about a week after a tooth extraction. These helpful hints should ease any discomfort and expedite your recovery:

  • Take painkillers as prescribed for toothache relief.
  • Relax for at least 24 hours after the procedure.
  • Plan to limit your physical activity for the next two days.
  • Keep your head propped up while lying down to reduce bleeding.
  • You should apply ice to the affected area immediately after the procedure to reduce swelling. Continue this treatment throughout your recovery for about 10 minutes at a time.
  • Do not rinse your mouth or spit for 24 hours after the extraction to avoid disturbing the blood clot.
  • After the first 24 hours, rinse your mouth several times a day with warm salt water.
  • Never drink from a straw for at least the first day following the procedure.
  • Eat soft foods, slowly adding solid foods as you heal.
  • Brush and floss your teeth as always, but avoid the extraction site.
